Clutter is a normal pain that almost everyone faces, especially when you’re juggling a busy work schedule, kids, pets, and all other facets of life. But with a new year comes a new opportunity to get your home in order and make a resolution (or two) to keep clutter at bay.
Here are a few easy-to-do New Year’s resolutions that cleaning and organizing professionals recommend.
It’s easier to stay on top of cleaning when you make it part of your routine. This doesn’t mean you need to tackle your entire home every time—keep the tasks contained (like organizing your bedroom closet) and frequent.
“Start by dedicating a specific day each week to decluttering a chosen area of your home,” says Angela Rubin, outreach manager at Hellamaid in Toronto. “Whether it’s a drawer, a shelf, or a room, commit to removing unnecessary items.”
Over time, Rubin says, this habit will prevent clutter from building up in the first place and cleaning becomes another weekly task to check off your to-do list instead of a big hurdle to cross.
Lauren Saltman, professional organizer and owner of Living. Simplified., an organizing company in New England, recommends creating a detailed list of the areas you want to organize. Work room by room and be as specific as possible.
“Saying, ‘I’d like to organize the family room’ can be very overwhelming,” Saltman says. “Your list should be more specific, including organizing tasks such as declutter the magazines, return stray dishes to the kitchen and put them in the dishwasher, and fold throw blankets.”
