If you think there’s no such thing as a faux pas in selecting and installing window treatments, think again. Mistakes can range from mismeasuring the window to miscalculating the occupiable space on either side of it. It can also be purely aesthetic in nature, such as using curtain panels that look ridiculously short and choppy for the window they’re dressing.
Here are six window treatment mistakes that experts commonly see and how you can rectify or avoid them.
Graber
Homeowners often overlook function as they focus mostly on aesthetics. In actuality, it’s best to consider both when selecting treatments, whether it's blinds or curtains.
“Window treatments are great solutions for light control, privacy, and insulation, and it’s important to think through those needs, too,” Erica Bail, creative director of Graber, says.
She recommends bringing home physical swatches of the window fabrics into the room, so you can visually see and feel them in the space you'll be living in. That way, you will not only know if they’re a good fit design-wise but can also hold them up to the window and see what type of light control and privacy they provide during the day and at night, she says.
Barrett Oswald Designs
If you decide to go with drapery, don’t make the mistake of fitting and installing curtain panels so precisely to the window, Barrett Oswald, principal designer of Barrett Oswald Designs, advises. For best results, she recommends installing the curtain rod a few inches above the window trim. The fabric, meanwhile, should be long enough to slightly touch the floor.
