In December 2019, I had the idea that I would like to try growing heritage salad leaf varieties in the Hydroponicum. Looking through the Heritage Seed Library Catalogue, I chose:
And then 2020 happened, and my project didn’t get off the ground. I have grown Black Seeded Samara, Bronze Arrow and (iirc) Uncle Bert’s Purple Kale; the two lettuce varieties have done very well.
So in December 2020, when the catalogue arrived again, I decided to reboot the project and chose six more heritage lettuce varieties: Amish Deer Tongue, Bath Cos, Bloddy Warrior, Brown Bath Cos, Burpee’s Iceberg and Greek Maroulli Cos.
That gives me 12 heritage varieties to properly trial this year, one each month. So I’ll start from the top of last year’s list, and when I sow the next batch of seeds for the Hydroponicum, I will include Gupta’s Indian Mustard.
