Aside from the dryer itself, dryer sheets make doing laundry that much easier—they are basically liquid fabric softeners in sheet form. Both add softness, remove static, and imbue your dry clothes with a hint of fragrance.
When getting ready for laundry day, you might be tempted to toss several sheets into your dryer. So we asked an expert: is one sheet per dryer load enough?
It’s not exactly the riddle of the Sphinx, but this question might give you pause, particularly if you tend to wash larger loads.
Before you start tossing in extra dryer sheets “just in case,” we asked an expert for advice.
Haven Polich is the product manager at ASKO, a laundry and appliances company.
The number of dryer sheets needed for a load can vary depending on load size and fabric type, but in general, one dryer sheet is enough for a standard load of laundry, according to laundry expert Haven Polich.
While you should follow the manufacturer’s guidelines on the dryer sheet box, it might be worth adding another sheet to larger loads.
However, you’ll want to ensure there's plenty of room in your dryer for the clothes to tumble—otherwise, the dryer sheets might get stuck and leave oily stains on your clothes.
Not all dryer sheets are cut the same. Bounce Mega Sheets, for example, are aptly named because they offer three times the power of regular dryer sheets—and are about three times the size. Polich says it’s “perfectly fine” to snip larger dryer sheets in half.
“For a typical size load, it can be a smart way to extend the usage of the sheets,” she says.
