ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti has taken on the role of commander of the International Space Station. She becomes the fifth European ISS commander and the first European woman to occupy the position.
Cristoforetti’s second ISS mission is called Minerva. Inspired by the Roman goddess of wisdom, handicrafts, and the arts, the name Minerva is a homage to the competence and sophisticated craftmanship of the people worldwide who make human spaceflight possible. The goddess Minerva also embodies the toughness and discipline we need, and the wisdom we wish to demonstrate, as we consolidate and expand human presence in space.
