As temperatures rise in the last half of summer, social media mavens have been hitting TikTok for a peek at what’s trending in the great outdoors. Rated People, a brand that matches people needing handy help with tradespeople who can take care of business, tallied the page views for all things #gardentok and shared a list of what’s trending.
We talked with a few individuals who finished their own backyard projects, so read on to see which gardening trends are worth it and helpful tips before beginning your DIY.
Rated People knows buying a big, new glass greenhouse can cost a pretty penny, so they suggest looking at secondhand sites such as Facebook Marketplace or eBay.
Garden guru and TikToker Michelle Ann has created three smaller greenhouses: One concocted from a display cabinet and customized to her liking, and two that are tabletop greenhouses.
“I added custom shelves, grow lights, weatherstripping to hold in the humidity, fans to circulate air, along with other add-ons,” she says. “This allows the temperature, humidity, and light to replicate a tropical environment for my plants.”
Michelle is creating two more cabinet-type greenhouses to join her growing indoor collection. She enjoys matching an indoor environment to the kind of plants that will thrive there, but she cautions that not every plant needs extra care. If you do decide to make a special space, don’t go overboard.
“Customizations can get quite expensive, so I recommend looking into what add-ons are necessary for your plants' needs and which add-ons are more 'nice-to-haves,'” she says.
