Most of us love to light a candle to make the living room cozier or freshen up the kitchen—and whether it's scented to mimic a warm vanilla latte or a bouquet of recently-cut lilacs, most people have a favorite scent. But when it comes to using a candle in an outdoor space, few have ever lit one unless it was to repel mosquitos with citronella or add a moody, unscented ambiance to a tablescape. We decided to do some research to see if outdoor scented candles exist and who is making them—because why can't you experience the joy of a cozy candle outdoors, too?
Made with a large surface area to effectively diffuse in the open air rather than in an enclosed space, LOEWE Perfumes makes two outdoor scented candles with the aromas of Thyme and Geranium. According to their site, the candles are made with thyme and geranium essence and are specifically designed for outdoor use. The candles aren't just for the scent, though—their thyme or geranium aroma naturally repels mosquitos as well, eliminating the need for citronella altogether.
ILLUME also produces an outdoor candle collection, complete with three different sizes and six different fragrances made with pure essential oils—the scents include Eucalyptus Ylang, Cypress Lavender, Rosewood Cassis, Amber Bergamot, Vetiver Sage or Citrus Cedarleaf. The collection is relatively new, having launched in January of 2022. The candles are poured into reusable ceramic containers so that once completely burned, they can be used for plants, decor, and more. ILLUME states that the candles are intended to be used in an outdoor living space and do include a touch of citronella to aid in repelling insects while still creating an inviting and enchanting outdoor mood.
