Dusk caught me unawares yesterday afternoon – with sunset officially occuring at about 4.00, I shouldn’t have been surprised, although it still seemed light as I finished cutting up the prunings from R Cécile Brunner (with only the teeniest bit of shed roof clambering required…) and headed inside for a cup of tea and piece of cake… to remember I hadn’t prepared for IAVOM!
Having decided previously to use blooms from ‘fantasy’ Chrysanthemum ‘Salcombe Joy’, growing in a pot in the Coop, I plucked three stems immediately – but knowing what to do with them then required lightning speed inspiration! The plant itself is not a pretty sight and probably requires a bigger pot, as growth has been stunted and stems anything but upright. The curved stems of the chosen blooms suggested they were closing in around something and their pinkness made me think of a pearl, so the concept of an oyster shell as a vase and a rose quartz sphere as the pearl quickly followed on. I have somehow managed to click a button on my camera to opt in to dates-stamping my photos, so you can see how quickly and how late the vase was put together! Leaves from Cyclamen hederifolium covered the gaps around the sphere, and to allow the maximum amount of water in the shell it was propped more upright with the help of a pastry ring.
